Summary: EPA expressed environmental objections because wasterock from several pits could generate leachatewith high concentrations of metals andmetalloids, and degrade water quality if theleachate should reach groundwater or surfacewaters, or if pit lakes would form. Also, EPAexpressed concerns about potential impacts to airquality and the lack of suitable soil forreclamation.
